Working through Still Lifes
These last few months have been very busy with lots of shows and painting at P. Allen Smith's Moss Mountain farm. Several of the still lifes I painted for my show were inspired by my last visit to the farm at the end of June. The large oversize kitchen island was set up with a variety of plants and flowers from the gardens; Dill, White Hydrangeas and Daylilies. These were all in simple glass vases or white pitchers. The kitchen is full of light with windows on all three sides and open to living area. It was airy and beautiful. Capturing that feeling back in my studio was not easy. Working in high key means paying very close attention to temperature and value changes. I am going to continue to develop more of this type of paintings and exploring new ways to put together compositions.
